Zelensky noted that today, as part of the Istanbul agreement, the first ship carrying 26,000 tons of corn left the port of Odessa.
“Today, it is not yet the time to draw any conclusions and predict further events. But the port has started working, the export movement has begun, and this can be called the first positive signal that there is a chance to stop the development of the food crisis in the world … We cannot have the illusion that that Russia will simply refrain from trying to disrupt Ukrainian exports. Russia has consistently provoked famine in the countries of Africa and Asia, which traditionally imported significant volumes of Ukrainian food,” Zelensky said.
He stressed that now there is a threat of a price crisis and food shortages for some European countries due to abnormal heat.
“Let’s see how the agreements will work, and whether there will really be security. 16 vessels are already waiting for their turn to be sent, and we are ready to make a proper contribution to stabilizing the global food market,” the president said.
He added that this is important for Ukraine not only because of billions of dollars in revenue, but also because of about one and a half million jobs for Ukrainians.
Operational command “South” today showed a video of the beginning of the grain export operation:
- This morning the first vessel with unblocked Ukrainian grain (26,000 tons of corn) came out from a Ukrainian-controlled port in the Black Sea. Expectedthat it will arrive in Istanbul on August 2.
