The Senate voted 95 votes to one in favor of ratifying the documents on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO.

As noted, in order to support the ratification of these documents, a two-thirds majority was required – at least 67 votes.

Senators from both parties strongly supported the membership of the two countries, calling them important allies whose modern military forces already cooperated closely with NATO.

“This historic vote sends an important signal of the United States’ continued bipartisan commitment to NATO and to ensuring that our Alliance is ready to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow,” US President Joe Biden said in a statement.

  • In June, 30 NATO allies signed for Finland and Sweden, the accession protocols now require all members of the alliance to ratify this decision. Ratification could take up to a year and has already been approved by several countries, including Canada, Germany and Italy.
