The speaker noted that the trip of the Congress delegation to the Indo-Pacific region “is aimed at mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance.”

“Our discussions with the Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and advancing our common interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the statement said.

Pelosi said US solidarity with Taiwan’s 23 million people “is more important today than ever as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.”

“Our visit is one of several visits by congressional delegations to Taiwan, and in no way conflicts with long-standing United States policy based on the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, the US-China Joint Communiqué, and the Six Assurances. The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo,” Pelosi said.
