In total, according to the voting results of the jury and the audience, the Ukrainian team received 631 points. In second place is British singer Sam Ryder with 466 points. On the third – the singer Chanel from Spain, who earned 459 points.
Kalush Orchestra with victory congratulated President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, he promised that one day the country will host Eurovision in the newly rebuilt Mariupol.
Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leinen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also congratulated the Ukrainian team on the victory. “This is a vivid reflection not only of your talent, but also of your unwavering support for your fight for freedom!” Johnson tweeted.
The soloist of the group Oleg Psyuk dedicated the song Stefania to his mother and all women who protect their children from the horrors of the “military special operation”. The Kalush Orchestra is named after the city of Kalush in the Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine. The Eurovision audience greeted the group with a standing ovation, the team was the favorite of 2022. Even before the start of the competition, the probability of winning the Ukrainian group was estimated at 70%.
The team got to Eurovision after the winner of the national selection in the country Alina Pash withdrew from it because of the scandal surrounding her performances in the Crimea, which took place back in 2015.
Russia this year is not admitted to the competition. This decision was made due to the “concern” of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) about the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. In addition, the Russians could not vote for participants from other countries. At the same time, the EBU stated that it is an apolitical organization whose mission is to serve the society.
Italy hosted the event thanks to last year’s successful performance by Maneskin, who won the competition with their composition Zitti e buoni. The country hosted Eurovision for the first time in over 30 years.
