Ukrainian Foreign Ministry welcomes Kosovo’s decision: It is important to prevent the Russian Federation from implementing its escalation policy – Ukraine news, Politics

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomed the decision of the Government of Kosovo to delay the re-registration of Serbian license plates and personal documents. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged not give Russia the opportunity to implement its policy of escalation in the region.

The Ukrainian department called on the parties to constructive dialogue in order to ensure the security of all citizens, preserve peace and ensure the stable development of the Western Balkans.

“It is important not to give the Russian Federation space to implement its policy of escalation in the region,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The Ukrainian department also reminded that a round-the-clock embassy in Serbia was opened to help Ukrainians: +381631113185. Earlier the embassy warned Ukrainians from visiting the southern part of Serbia due to the aggravation of the situation on the border with Kosovo.

REFERENCE. Kosovo seceded from Serbia and declared its independence in 2008. Serbia still does not recognize the independence of the republic. Kosovo has been recognized by 116 countries, including the United States and most EU countries. Among those who refused to recognize the independence of the republic are Ukraine and some EU members: Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia. Kosovo supports Western sanctions against Russia. Serbia has friendly relations with Moscow. The military of the two countries regularly conduct joint exercises. In addition, in 2019, the Serbian Minister of Defense stated that the country could withdraw from the EU for the sake of Russia.
  • On August 1, Kosovo was about to introduce temporary residence permits for Serbian citizens and start converting cars to Kosovo license plates. Serbia regarded this as oppression and accused the Kosovo authorities of trying to launch a forceful action against the Serbian population.
  • July 31 Serbs block roads in Kosovo, sirens and gunfire were heard. Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that the coming days in the country will be difficult. According to him, aggravation of the situation in Kosovo associated with “Serbian chauvinism”.
