UK imposes sanctions against Alina Kabaeva and Putin’s ex-wife

British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss announced new sanctions against the Russians, who, according to London, store the assets of the Russian president, and also receive top positions “in exchange for their loyalty.”

In addition to Kabaeva and Ocheretnaya, Alina Kabaeva’s grandmother Anna Zatseplina, the president’s cousins Igor and Roman Putin, the cousin of the head of state and deputy chairman of the board of Gazprom Mikhail Putin, as well as one of the shareholders of Rossiya Bank Mikhail Shelomov were sanctioned.

Also on the list were:

  • “close friend” of the Russian President Alexander Plekhov. According to the UK, Plekhov “benefited from his relationship with Putin”, and his company Vital Development Corporation is under “significant state patronage”.
  • Executive Director of Rossiya Bank and member of the Board of Directors of SOGAZ Mikhail Klishin;
  • son of Putin’s childhood friend Vladimir Kolbin. He, according to London, received support from the Russian state as a director of the Gelendzhik Sea Port LLC;
  • Yuri Shamalov is the brother of Putin’s former son-in-law Kirill Shamalov, president of Gazfond and member of the board of directors of Gazprombank.
  • Russian lawyer and businessman Viktor Khmarin. He, according to the British government, owned a number of enterprises, including Nefteproduktservis LLC, which worked in the Russian energy sector.

London’s sanctions list also includes Putin’s assets: an apartment in St. Petersburg, two Soviet-era cars from the 1950s, a trailer and a garage.

After that, the Russian Foreign Ministry recommended that Russians refrain from traveling to the UK, as well as from trying to get a British visa.

“Taking into account the extremely unfriendly course of the UK towards our country, in order to avoid financial losses and other possible problems, we recommend that Russian citizens refrain, if possible, from traveling to the UK and trying to obtain British visas,” the agency said (quote by Interfax).
