The UN is either reformed or will repeat the fate of the League of Nations – UNIAN

We are lucky that in the next war with Russia we have allies. The reasons why many advanced countries of the world help Ukraine are quite simple.

Firstly, in this war, Ukraine defends the rights of the recognized universal principles of morality and that were formed after the Second World War: the right to self-determination, self-government, and the development of one’s culture. The right to life and health of its citizens.

Ukraine was not alone with Russian aggression, as it was in the past in different historical periods

Secondly, the allies are pursuing a very pragmatic goal (and we see and understand it very well): Ukrainians, at the cost of their lives, health and well-being of the country, protect Europe from hybrid influence and direct invasion of Russian troops, wear down the Russian economy and the military-industrial complex. Thanks to the courageous resistance of the Ukrainians, our allies are now not sending their military to their deaths, but are fighting the Russian invasion with our own hands, providing Ukraine with money and weapons.

Everyone understands, but it’s still very good that at this historical moment Ukraine was not on its own with Russian aggression, as it was in the past in different historical periods.

The United Nations is one of Ukraine’s allies. Now in our country there are two structural formations of the UN:

1. United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs

2. United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine also got into a reputational scandal

Regarding the first, humanitarian goods in the form of food, medicines and clothing are indeed given to us a lot. This is shown in the reports and is confirmed by people from the territories of Ukraine affected by the Russians. However, it should be remembered that the UN is not only humanitarian supplies and financial support. It is an organization that has clear goals declared in its charter. And for these purposes, its members allocate considerable funds.

Reports on the activities of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the public domain. However, they have one big question: why do they avoid mentioning the causes of the humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine in every possible way? Why is it not specified who is behind it?

From the Ukrainian structural entities of the UN, we hear only about concern, condemnation and sympathy

And these are not empty words and questions. After all, for example, operational reports of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in June-July list hundreds of pages of problems caused by the Russian attack for Ukrainians: killings of people, lack of housing and food. And no mention that Russia is the cause of the humanitarian catastrophe. It only indicates negotiations with the participation of the Russian Federation in the export of grain. It is good that at least the text does not contain gratitude to Russia for participating in these negotiations.

That is, in the reports over the past two months, we read about a lot of crimes committed by the Russians and the Russian government, but in the documents, the Russians are hardly mentioned in a negative sense!

In addition, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine also got into a reputational scandal when representatives of the mission publicly equated brutal murders and torture of Ukrainians by Russians with the events of alleged torture of Russians allegedly by Ukrainians, which are spread by Russian propaganda…

Every day, it is Russian missiles that kill hundreds of Ukrainians and destroy our property. These are facts that cannot be interpreted ambiguously, let alone silent about them. However, it seems that they are deliberately ignored. The reports are as streamlined as possible, without mentioning the specific crimes of the Russians.

Unfortunately, from the Ukrainian structural formations of the UN we hear only about concern, condemnation and sympathy. Yes, there is humanitarian aid, it is very essential. But this is not enough.

The UN has clear mechanisms in relation to Russia as a member state, which ignores the charter of the organization and all possible norms of international law. Moreover, the UN is not an abstract organization, it is concrete people. In Ukraine, there is an office of the UN System Coordinator in Ukraine, where Ukrainian citizens work. They work and allow the crimes of Russians to be hushed up in reporting! Maybe this should be changed?

This is not the first time that the UN has been criticized for super-weak security performance. And the terrible war in Ukraine and the complete impunity of Russia continue to show the weakness of the organization. However, Ukraine will definitely defeat Russia in the war. And the UN is being reformed, or it will repeat the fate of the League of Nations.
