Moscow has once again added a new license plate region code. From June 21, the State traffic inspectorate will issue signs with the code 977 to motorists. About this declared in the Telegram channel of the press service of the department.
The traffic police clarified that the already known codes 797 and 799 will continue to be issued until a number of such numbers are completely exhausted. In 2013, new rules came into force in Russia, according to which car owners received the right, if they wish, to keep their numbers and use them on another vehicle or transfer them to a new owner. This procedure canceled paper transit numbers, which were previously issued for the period of re-registration.
From January 1, 2020, drivers were allowed to receive new numbers not only in traffic police departments. After assigning the combination, the car owner can contact any authorized workshop and make a number there. Thanks to this, drivers can issue a number in a region different from the place where the car was registered.
Russian license plates with a digital code appeared in 1993. The issuance of the first numbers with the code 77 began in Moscow in October this year. After all combinations with such a code were exhausted, in 1998 the traffic police began to assign the code 99 to Muscovites. Then, in 2002, 97 appeared, in 2004 – 177, in 2007 – 199, in 2010 – 197. In 2013, 2017 and 2020, they began to issue 777, 799 and 797.
The region code on the plates is determined by the place of registration of the owner of the car. When changing the region of registration, the owner is obliged to change the numbers.
Code 977 became the tenth for Moscow. The capital is the leader in the number of assigned codes, followed by St. Petersburg, Krasnodar Territory and Krasnoyarsk: here the codes had to be added three times. Now there are four codes in St. Petersburg: 78, 98, 178 and 198.
Since the spring of 2021, drivers have been allowed to issue a vehicle registration certificate in electronic format. A QR code with data in the Auto State Services application can be presented to the traffic police instead of a paper STS. In July 2022, the Ministry of Digital announced new opportunities: in the summer, it will also be possible to transfer a driver’s license and an OSAGO policy into an electronic format.
