President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that the decision to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership is the biggest step towards strengthening Europe in the face of Russian aggression.

He stated this in an address to the participants of the EU summit after the announcement of the decision to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership.

“Today you made one of the most important decisions for Ukraine in all 30 years of independence of our state. However, this decision is not only for Ukraine. This is the biggest step towards strengthening Europe that could be done right now, in our time and in such conditions when the Russian war tests our ability to maintain freedom and unity,” the head of state said.

He thanked all the leaders of European countries for supporting this decision, and also expressed the hope that the EU flag will be in every Ukrainian city.

“The Ukrainian and European flags will be together even when we rebuild our country after this war together. And today I want to thank separately and precisely within the framework of our joint meeting of the summit of all European leaders. I want to thank our heroes – each and everyone who defends the independence of Ukraine and the freedom of Europe with arms in hand. Thank you for making possible the new history of Ukraine, the new history of Europe – even stronger, even freer,” Zelensky stressed.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on February 28, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.

Today, 23 June, the European Council granted Ukraine candidate status for membership in the European Union.
