The decision of the European Council on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership is expected today.

The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, is confident that the leaders of the European Union will formally grant the status on June 23 EU candidate Ukraine and Moldova.

Michel said this before the meeting with the leaders of the Balkan countries, posting a video of his briefing on Twitter.

“This is a defining moment for the European Union. This is a geopolitical choice that we will make today. I am confident that we will grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, as well as a clear European perspective to Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova,” Michel said.

On June 17, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EC had recommended to the European Council give Ukraine a European perspective and candidate status for EU membership.
