The ban “Sohnut” – the Israeli delegation failed to agree with Russia

The Israeli delegation is disappointed that the talks with Russia by the Jewish Agency got into a dead end. About it writes edition of the Jerusalem Post.

Diplomatic sources familiar with the details of the meeting said it took place on Monday morning “between officials and not with the political echelon that actually makes the decision.” This formal meeting discussed only the legal implications of Russian privacy laws.

The official explained that the Israeli delegation was hoping to get a hint from the Russians on the course of action that would help save the Jewish agency in Russia from liquidation.

Unfortunately, this did not happen. No further meetings were planned and no decisions were made“, – added the interlocutor.

Israel is now counting on progress on this issue at the political level. In particular, there is speculation that one of the Israeli heavyweight politicians – President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett or Prime Minister Yair Lapid – may influence the situation. The Duke has already hinted that he is involved in the talks unofficially, but did not specify whether he really is in dialogue with the Kremlin.

The only thing we can do now is to wait for the trial on August 19th. There is no reason to hope that the court will be honest and professional, but nonetheless“, – said the source of the publication.

Before the meeting of the Israeli delegation, Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi met with Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov on the same issue. According to Israeli sources, Bogdanov asked for a meeting.

The Basmanny Court of Moscow on Thursday began considering the claim of the Ministry of Justice of Russia on liquidation of the office of the Jewish Agency in Russia. At the preparatory meeting, the hearing was scheduled for 19 August.

As reported, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation demands to liquidate the representative office of the Jewish agency “Sokhnut”which helps the repatriation of Jews. The claims of the Ministry of Justice are related to “violation of Russian legislation.”
