In the sixth month of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian occupation troops actively form “volunteer” units for the war against Ukraine.

The formation of divisions takes place in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. This is stated in summary Institute for the Study of War (ISW) July 31st.

Two artillery battalions “Nevsky” and “Ladoga” are being formed in the Leningrad Region, and local authorities have announced additional social support for “conscripts” who have signed a contract.

“Volunteers” are offered a one-time payment of 200,000 rubles and social benefits.

In addition, in Luga, not far from St. Petersburg, the Russians are forming the “St. Petersburg” battalion.

According to analysts, the purpose of the formation of “volunteer” units is to replenish the reserves of Russians for the war against Ukraine without a general mobilization in the Russian Federation.

War in Ukraine:

As of July 31, 2022, Russian troops were conducting ground attacks around Bakhmut and the outskirts of Donetsk, as well as southwest of Izyum. However, only one attack east of Bakhmut brought them limited success.

The ISW noted that Russian forces no longer conducted ground assaults in the Seversk area, which suggests that they are losing priority to operations in this area. Satellite images show that Russian reinforcements are concentrated on the border with Ukraine on a land line that leads to Izyum.

Analysts suggest that the Russian invaders will focus on attacks on Bakhmut and around Donetsk, but there will be no success.
