Rebranding of slippers and towels. How hotel chains left Russia because of Ukraine

Under Russian brands

Kommersant April 29 informedthat due to the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, the British hotel operator InterContinental Hotel Group (brands Holiday Inn, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza) decided to leave Russia. According to the newspaper, his departure will result in a loss of $124 million in annual income.

The publication then noted that the hotels themselves would not be closed, they would be transferred under the management of Russian operators or hotel owners.

The same thing happened with the Hyatt Regency brand hotel in Sochi, which at the end of March announced its withdrawal from Russia. Now the hotel is called Grand Karat Sochi. In addition, the Hyatt Regency Petrovsky Park hotel in Moscow has changed its sign and is now simply called the Petrovsky Park Congress Hotel.

Two hotels in Yekaterinburg (Hyatt Regency Ekaterinburg and Hyatt Place Yekaterinburg), despite the old names, are not related to Hyatt: it is impossible to book a room in Russia on the company’s website in any of the cities. In addition, the situation with the name of the hotel, previously owned by Hyatt, which was planned to be launched in Rostov-on-Don in May, remains in question.

Employees of Grand Karat Sochi April 29 explained BFM.Ru that only the name has changed, while the infrastructure, the number of rooms and even the management have remained the same. Everything that was provided at the hotel earlier remained in place, only the loyalty program was modernized.

In early March, Hilton closed its corporate office in Moscow and announced that it would provide jobs for its employees. The firm’s press service clarified that they were halting “all new development activities in Russia.”

In addition, work on the Russian market after the start of a special operation in Ukraine was suspended by Marriott. It has announced that it will not open new hotels in Russia and is closing its corporate office in Moscow.

As a result, the Russian Cosmos Hotel Group (part of AFK Sistema) took over the management of the four-star Marriott Courtyard hotel in Moscow. According to representatives of Cosmos HG, there will be no failure in the operation of the hotel. Hotel prices, room categories and other conditions also remain unchanged.

In April, the Marriott chain (Sheraton, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance) disconnected several Russian hotels from its system: in Krasnodar, Kazan and St. Petersburg. At the same time, hotels in Moscow are still available for booking.

Refusal of new projects

In mid-March, the French hotel operator Accor (Novotel, Ibis, Mercure, Rixos, Pullman, Swissotel, Movenpick, Sofitel) announced the suspension of the opening of new facilities in Russia. At the same time, the management of 50 Russian hotels will continue.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts premium chain as March 30 reported Vedomosti, refused to manage the elite hotel and residential complex Fairmont/Vesper, which is being built next to the Mayakovskaya metro station in the center of Moscow.

In early March, the Finnish concern S-Group (three Sokos hotels in St. Petersburg, as well as the Prisma supermarket chain) declared, which terminates all operations in Russia. The company promised that they would pay employees (about a thousand people) compensation. S-Group has been operating on the Russian market since 2006.

Who left before

It is not the first time that foreign companies representing the tourism industry have left Russia due to sanctions. So, in 2015, the Turkish luxury hotel chain Rixos refused to work with one of the most expensive hotels in Yalta Mriya Resort & SPA after the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

In the same year, the work in the republic was stopped by the Radisson company, the hotel, after rebranding, was named Riviera Sunrise Resort & SPA. And in 2018, the American hotel chain Best Western Hotels & Resorts finally left the peninsula, after which the hotel in Sevastopol began to be called the Sevastopol Hotel.
