Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan met with its president, Tsai Ing-wen, transmits BBC. Before the talks, Tsai presented Pelosi with Taiwan’s highest honor, the Order of Benevolent Clouds. This is how the President of Taiwan honored the speaker of the lower house of the US Congress for his contribution to the development of US-Taiwan relations.
Nancy Pelosi said the US delegation came to Taiwan to make it clear that the US will not give up solidarity with it.
“Now more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is critical. And that is the message we bring here today,” Pelosi said.
She added that the US and Taiwan have built a “thriving partnership” based on “common values.” Pelosi said Democrats and Republicans are united in their support for Taiwan.
Tsai thanked the Speaker of the US House of Representatives for his attention and “staunch support” for Taiwan. She also mentioned a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. In particular, Tsai said that the Russian-Ukrainian war has made security in the Taiwan Strait another object of attention for the whole world.
“Aggression against democratic Taiwan would have a huge impact on the security of the entire Indo-Pacific region… Taiwan will not back down. We will firmly uphold our national sovereignty and hold the line of defense of our global security,” said Tsai Ing-wen.
In her speech, she also said that Taiwan is building up its defense capabilities “will hold the line of defense” for the democracies in the region.
Pelosi has previously stated that her visit to Taipei is a testament to the United States’ support for Taiwanese democracy.
Leader of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping criticized the visit of the representative of the US Congress to Taiwan. The politician believes that such actions are another US provocation. In turn, the Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador to Beijing Nicholas Burns in protest against the arrival of Nancy Pelosi.
Amid the speaker’s visit, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army announced that will hold new military exercises in six regions around the island of Taiwan.
