Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan – China condemns Pelosi’s visit over her attitude towards democracy on the island

China condemned US visit to Taiwan at its highest level in 25 years, as Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi called the island “one of the freest societies in the world” in her speech to the Taipei Parliament, writes Reuters. Pelosi said her visit to Taipei demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the United States to Taiwan’s democracy.

In her address to parliament, the speaker of the lower house of the US Congress praised President Tsai Ing-wen, whom China accuses of insisting on formal independence for the island.

“We thank you for your leadership. We want the world to recognize this,” Pelosi said and called for increased inter-parliamentary cooperation.

She also added that the new US legislation “offers more opportunities for US-Taiwan economic cooperation.” In general, the legislation that Pelosi mentioned is intended to strengthen the US chip industry to compete with China.

Already during a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen The Speaker of the House of Representatives said that now more than ever, US solidarity with Taiwan is critical. She added that the United States’ determination to preserve democracy in Taiwan and the rest of the world remains unwavering.

Pelosi addedthat the US wants Taiwan to have freedom and security and will not back down from it. In addition, she said that the United States respects the “One China” policy, but also supports the status quo of Taiwan.

In turn, Tsai Ing-wen noted that Taiwan is striving to maintain the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. Therefore, according to her, China’s military exercises, launched in response to Pelosi’s visit, are an unnecessary reaction.

The last visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives took place in 1997, when Newt Gingrich visited the island. However, Pelosi’s visit came against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in Sino-US relations, and China has become a much more powerful economic, military and geopolitical power over the past quarter century.

Pelosi has previously stated that her visit to Taipei is a testament to the United States’ support for Taiwanese democracy.

In turn, the Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador to Beijing Nicholas Burns in protest against the arrival of Nancy Pelosi.

Amid the speaker’s visit, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army announced that will hold new military exercises in six regions around the island of Taiwan.
