PACE finds Russia guilty of downing flight MH17 – UNIAN

The PACE noted that they were shocked by the misinformation spread by the Russian authorities about the crash of the Malaysia Airlines flight.

The plane was shot down in 2014 by a Russian missile.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe found Russia responsible for the downing in 2014 of a Malaysian Boeing 777 aircraft operating flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

The PACE adopted the corresponding resolution on June 23, reported on the organization’s website.

PACE said that based on evidence provided by the Ukrainian and Dutch authorities, it considers the “most convincing scenario” that flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in 2014 by a Russian Buk missile provided to Russian-controlled militants.

The PACE noted that they were shocked by the misinformation spread by the Russian authorities about the downing of the Malaysia Airlines flight, which caused “pain and suffering” among the relatives and friends of the victims.

“Instead of providing reliable information to the competent investigating authorities, the Russian authorities are spreading disinformation, including consistent conflicting versions of events designed to create confusion. As demonstrated by open source intelligence published in numerous reports, the Russian authorities have even gone so far as to file manipulative radar , satellite and other data to hide the truth,” the statement said.

In particular, Russian versions that a Ukrainian Su-25 or MiG-29 fighter shot down flight MH17, or that a Ukrainian Buk missile fired from Kyiv-controlled territory were to blame, have been “completely refuted.”

PACE called on Russia to officially apologize to the relatives of the MH17 victims for the pain and suffering caused by the previous disinformation.

The Assembly also called on the European Court of Human Rights to consider giving priority to the statements of the next of kin of the victims of the accident “given their intense and continuing suffering”.
