The President added that, apart from the words of the invaders, nothing is known about the condition of the Ukrainian prisoners of war.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is working on the release of defenders Mariupol.
He stated this on briefing following a meeting with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bethel.
According to the President, this is a complex issue. He assured that at the political level, our state is doing everything to release the Ukrainian defenders from captivity. This process involves the International Committee of the Red Cross, the UN and even several states that have a certain influence on the Russians.
“I can’t say many details. I really want the exchange to take place, so that certain partners who have undertaken to help with this exchange really keep their word. We not only believe in this. We work, but all the work is done on site of our Main Intelligence Directorate. They manage this process. We will expect results,” he said.
Zelensky stressed that it is important not to waste time in resolving these issues, as this negatively affects the Ukrainian defenders who are in captivity of the Russian Federation, especially the wounded.
“What is happening to them right now, with their injuries, what kind of help, except in words (they are provided – UNIAN), we do not know anything else,” the head of state said.
He clarified that intelligence has more detailed information on this matter.
As UNIAN reported, the defenders of Azovstal in Mariupol heroically held the line for about two months, diverting enemy forces and preventing it from moving to other directions. The Russian occupiers destroyed Azovstal by firing rockets and bombs across the territory of the plant, firing from artillery and tanks, while carrying out ground attacks and assaults.
On May 16, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the highest military command had given an order to the commanders of the units that are at Azovstal to save the lives of personnel. It was noted that the garrison completed the assigned combat mission.
After midnight on May 17, an operation began to rescue the defenders of Mariupol blocked on the territory of the Azovstal plant.
According to the Ministry of Defense, on May 16, 53 seriously wounded were evacuated from Azovstal to a medical facility in Novoazovsk. Another 211 people were taken through the humanitarian corridor to the occupied Olenevka.
Subsequently, the media reported that a total of about 1.7 thousand defenders were evacuated from Azovstal.
Now they are in the temporarily occupied territories. An exchange is planned to return them home.
On June 6, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that there could be more than 2.5 thousand prisoners of war from Azovstal on the territory of ORDLO and stressed that now the Main Intelligence Directorate has the task of returning the military home alive.
