The Shevchenkovsky District Court of Kyiv recognized that Yuri Rossoshansky guilty of the murder of human rights activist and lawyer Irina Nozdrovskaya, whose body was found in a reservoir near the village of Demidov in 2018. The man received 15 years in prison for the crime, according to the Center for Human Rights ZMINA.
As noted, this period will be considered from the moment Rossoshansky was taken into custody – from January 2018. According to judge Pavel Slobodyanyuk, the man could not be sentenced to life imprisonment, because at the time of the announcement of the verdict he was already 68 years old.
The accused will also have to compensate the injured party for approximately four million hryvnias in moral damages, according to civil claims.
The court acknowledged that Rossoshansky’s testimony was sufficiently detailed. However did not confirm the veracity of his past statements about alleged coercion by the police to provide false information.
At the same time, the search of the Rossoshanskys’ house, during which the investigators allegedly found a stain on the wall, where traces of the deceased human rights activist’s blood were found after scraping, was declared inadmissible by the court due to procedural violations and the relevant protocols were seized.
For the same reason, the report of the inspection of the scene of the incident, the study of Nozdrovskaya’s Facebook page and the results of an examination of the epithelium from under the nails of the victim, which allegedly showed the presence of the DNA of the accused, were also called inadmissible for the same reason.
In addition, the court did not confirm the version of the family of Irina Nozdrovskaya regarding the contract and group nature of the murder.
Yuri Rossoshansky will be able to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal. He will remain in custody pending appeal.
