The European Council decided to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status for membership in the European Union.
French President Emmanuel Macron notes that granting Ukraine and Moldova status of candidates for accession to the European Union is a strong signal of Russia.
The President of France declared in Brussels at a joint press conference with President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
Macron recalled that the EU first demonstrated unity on the issue of imposing sanctions against Russia and providing Ukraine with macroeconomic and military support, and now on the issue of granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership.
“We are now offering a European perspective to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. Our choice to give Ukraine and Moldova candidate status for EU accession is a strong signal to Russia in the current geopolitical context. We also decided that candidate status will be granted to Georgia as soon as it reaches criteria set by the European Commission,” Macron said.
He added that the Ukrainian people are fighting for European values, their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to Macron, the path to joining the EU will be long, and certain requirements will also need to be met.
Also, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz congratulated Ukraine and Moldova on granting the status of candidates for membership in the European Union.
He wrote about this in Twitter.
“27 times yes! Congratulations to Ukraine and Moldova: the European Council welcomes the two new EU candidate countries. For good cooperation in the European family!” he said.
