In 1996, the day of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War was declared the Day of Memory and Sorrow. On this day in Russia, flags are lowered to half-mast at state institutions, flowers are laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and war memorials.

In 2022, in some Russian cities, in the early morning, recordings of announcers and songs of the war years were broadcast on the streets. During the day, the Candle of Memory and other memorable events will be held. RTVI has put together a photo gallery of how Russians remember the day the Great Patriotic War began.
