China promises “strong and powerful” response – UNIAN

The diplomat noted that Pelosi represents the highest echelon of American power, so her visit to Taiwan cannot be perceived as an ordinary event.

“Her visit, in any form and at any time during her tenure, will bring extremely painful political backlash and will result in an escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait and between the US and China,” he added.

Gang also said that the last time the speaker of the US Congress visited Taiwan was 25 years ago. According to him, this visit “was a mistake” and a “lesson” that the United States allegedly did not learn.

As UNIAN reported, a few hours ago at the airport in Taipei (the capital of Taiwan) An American jet landed on board which was the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. Her visit came amid threats from China.

According to Taiwanese media, Pelosi was scheduled to begin her visit to Taiwan around 5:30 pm ET. She is supposed to leave the island tomorrow.

China has stated that will respond with “drastic measures” if Pelosi travels to Taiwan, and also noted that he “strongly objects” to a possible visit.

On the eve of the proposed visit, Beijing warned of “egregious political consequences.” Chinese officials also said the nation “will not sit idly by” if Beijing feels its “sovereignty and territorial integrity” are under threat.

The American side has not officially confirmed Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Her Asian tour includes visits to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, some of which have already taken place.

Pelosi became the first senior US politician to visit Taiwan in 25 years.
