Magazine Rolling stone citing several people familiar with the circumstances of Zabelski’s death, reports that he was a US Army veteran and died after being blown up by a mine.
According to information in obituaries, Zabelsky died near Dorozhnyanka (Zaporozhye region) on May 15.
The State Department is in touch with the family and has provided “all possible consular assistance,” the State Department said. The official declined to provide more details “out of respect for the family at this difficult time.”
