At least 28 people, including four children, have died as a result of floodscaused by heavy rains in Kentucky. The death toll is expected to rise.

This was stated by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, adding that the search for bodies will continue for several weeks. Reuters.

The governor explained that the bodies will be found as rescuers reach remote areas.

“Damage is everywhere, many families have been forced to flee their homes, and more rain is expected over the next day,” the governor tweeted.

The floods were the second major disaster to hit Kentucky in the past seven months, following several tornadoes that killed nearly 80 people in December 2021.

He declared a state of emergency and called the current disaster “one of the worst and most destructive floods” in Kentucky history. It could take years to restore the state’s infrastructure, Beshear warned.

On Friday, President Joe Biden declared a major natural disaster in Kentucky. The state received federal funding.

As UNIAN reported earlier, another US state, California, is suffering from the largest fire this year, as a result of which 2,000 residents were evacuated and houses and critical infrastructure were destroyed.
